Who We Are

Social Settlement was part of the national Settlement House movement, which originated in England during the late 1800's. Jane Addams pioneered the movement in the United States near the turn of the century, adding a unique perspective to the development of social work.

The movement addressed fundamental social and economic issues to empower individuals to better their won lives as well as those in the community. The Settlement House movement both reflected and was part of major changes during the 20th Century (including labor union activities, sanitation and housing reforms, exploitation and discrimination of workers, child labor laws and poverty issues).

Social Settlement of Omaha was established in 1908 and embraced the cause of the movement sharing these same ideals with local residents. At Social Settlement, our mission is to empower and enrich children and adults of all ages by providing programs, education and community resources. The Settlement continues to provide opportunities to people of all ages, backgrounds, beliefs and capabilities. Through constant assessment, Social Settlement strives to identify the needed programs and services for the community.
